Bio: Ricardo Uauy M.D. Ph.D. is Professor of Public Health Nutrition at the Institute of Nutrition (INTA) University of Chile and London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, UK. He received his Medical Doctor degree from the University of Chile in 1972, and his Ph.D. in Nutritional Biochemistry from MIT in 1977.  Ricardo trained in Pediatrics from 1972 to 1974 and in Clinical Nutrition from 1976 to 1977 at Harvard Children's Hospital in Boston, as well as in Neonatology at Yale New-Haven Hospital between 1974 and 1975. At INTA, University of Chile, he became Associate Professor  in 1977 and  Professor in 1981, he was also its Director from 1994 to 2002. Ricardo has participated in multiple WHO/FAO expert committees including Protein Energy (1981), Fats and Oils (1993), FBDGs (1995), Obesity a Global Epidemic (1997),  Vitamin and Minerals (1998), Nutrition in the Elderly (1998), and Human Energy needs (2001). He acted as chair of the WHO/FAO Nutrition Diet and Chronic Disease in 2002, the Global Strategy WHO in 2003, the WHO/FAO Scientific Update on CHO in 2006 and on Trans Fats in 2007. Likewise, he chaired the  FAO/WHO  Consultation Fats and Fatty Acids in Human Nutrition in 2009. He was a Member of IPA Council in 2001-05 and a nutrition adviser to date. He was also President of the IUNS in 2005-09.
