Nutrition-related health impact of biofuel-induced food-price inflation

Thursday, July 18, 2013 - 12:30 to 13:30

This study explores the relationship between liquid biofuels, food prices and nutrition-related health outcomes in four countries: Guatemala, Malawi, Brazil and the USA. We assessed undernutrition in terms of child stunting and micronutrient deficiency for the former three countries and overnutrition in terms of ischemic heart disease in Brazil and the USA. All calculations are based on published data. Our (preliminary) results suggest that biofuel-induced food-price inflation is likely to exacerbate undernutrition in food insecure populations, but could provide benefits in areas with high levels of overnutrition. Based on this study, the talk will focus on the methodological aspects of this and related approaches.
