100 LIDC members meet to network and exchange ideas

More than 100 LIDC members: students, staff and alumni of the six Bloomsbury Colleges, attended the Biannual LIDC Networking Event on 14 June 2012 held at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM).

Jeff Waage, Director of LIDC, welcomed the attendees and highlighted some of LIDC’s latest projects and future plans. LIDC has recently undergone a very successful External Review, which reaffirmed the organisation’s strong position vis-a-vis its stakeholders. As a result of the Review, LIDC is planning to launch a Fellowship Programme for LIDC members and organise a biannual members conference.

Two guest speakers from LSHTM, the hosting college, were then invited to reflect on the upcoming Euro 2012 and London 2012 sporting events. Patrick Wilson, Head of Communications at LSHTM, talked about the long tradition of research into sport and physical activity at the School, and briefly presented the exciting programme of activities that the School has planned for the duration of the Olympic Games. David Ross, Professor of Epidemiology & International Public Health at LSHTM, presented some findings from his research, conducted in partnership with Institute of Education, another LIDC member college, on the subject of ‘Sport and HIV prevention’.

An evening of networking over drinks and nibbles followed, whereby participants were encouraged to engage in conversations with representatives of other colleges.
LIDC organises two networking events per year, in order to bring together its members dispersed at six different institutions, build a sense of a community, and consult with members on future activities.

The next networking event is planned for October 2012 and all current, as well as prospective LIDC members, are invited to attend.
