Distance Learning and International Development: A Winning Combination

Professor Jeff Waage, Director of LIDC, spoke of the ‘magical’ potential of combining development-related distance learning courses when he launched LIDC's Distance Learning for Development (DL4D) Resource Pack. He outlined LIDC’s new DL4D Initiative on 15 July at a reception in London for hundreds of education experts attending the Fifth Pan-Commonwealth Forum on Open Learning (PCF5).

DL4D seeks to maximise the contribution of the development-related distance learning activities of LIDC’s six member Colleges (Birkbeck,

Institute of Education, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, RoyalVeterinaryCollege, School of Oriental and African Studies, and School of Pharmacy). Prof Waage mentioned at the event held at the Insitute of Education how academics tend to work in ‘silos’ and how DL4D aims to overcome this trend by developing cross-College links and interdisciplinary distance learning courses.

LIDC is also working with other Colleges within the University of London, the University of London’s External System and partner institutions overseas to identify needs and explore possibilities leading to the improvement of existing and new distance learning courses. DL4D will also build an understanding of the opportunities created by Information and Communication Technologies for Development (ICT4D) in distance learning. New learning technologies linked to internet and mobile phone infrastructures provide a platform for communication, file sharing, and a range of multimedia and social networking applications.

The DL4D Resource Pack showcases the existing innovative and diverse distance learning courses and ICT4D programmes underway in the University of London.
