REPORT RELEASE: The Future of Food and Farming – Challenges and choices for global sustainability

Experts from the Bloomsbury Colleges, involved with LIDC and the Leverhulme Centre for Integrative Research on Agriculture and Health (LCIRAH), have contributed to this ground-breaking Government Foresight Report on the Future of Food and Farming, which was released yesterday.

The Foresight project aimed to explore the pressures on the global food system between now and 2050, and identify the decisions that policy makers need to take to ensure that a global population rising to nine billion or more can be fed sustainably and equitably.

A major conclusion of the report is the critical importance of interconnected policy-making. The report argues that policy in other sectors outside the food system needs to be developed in much closer conjunction with that for food. These areas include energy, water supply, land use, the sea, ecosystem services and biodiversity. Achieving much closer coordination with all of these wider areas is a major challenge for policy-makers.
