Ealier this week, the winner and runners-up of the LIDC Photography Competition 'Lens on Development' were announced. The competition was open to all post-graduate students, staff and alumni of our member colleges: Birkbeck, SOAS, LSHTM, UCL IOE, RVC and current students at UCL DPU. The deadline for submission was the 31st of October and photos had to relate to the theme of either the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) or academic research in global development issues. Each entry had to provide a description and explain how the photo was related to these themes. Over 50 photo submissions were received of which 11 were shortlisted. Two runners up and one winner was announced.

The awards were handed out at the LIDC Christmas event, where the CEO of the photography charity PhotoVoice was invited to give a presentation on their work and choose the winner. This years winner was Stephanie VandeBerg for her photo 'Kalukembe Neonate', which shows a child, only a few minutes old born, in a rural hospital in Angola. The two runners up were Anthea Katelaris and Heather Cooper, whose photos portrayed 'tuberculosis' and 'kangaroo mother care' respectively.
