LCIRAH

Leverhulme Centre for Integrative Research in Agriculture and Health (LCIRAH)

LCIRAH is a new Centre established under a five-year £3.5m grant from The Leverhulme Trust to build a new intersectoral and interdisciplinary platform for integrating research in agriculture and health, with a focus on international development goals. This Centre is enabling researchers from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, School of Oriental and African Studies, School of Pharmacy, and Royal Veterinary College to work together to develop unifying research approaches and methodologies that integrate agricultural and health research.  The aim is to better address complex global issues surrounding feeding nine billion people healthily by 2050. The research programme, which involves anthropologists, economists, agricultural researchers, public health professionals, and nutritionists will explore a range of themes with agricultural and health components, including:

• Poverty and Development
• Diet, Globalisation and Food Quality
• Sustainability, Environment and Climate Change
• Agriculture, Health and Food-Borne and Zoonotic Diseases
• Metrics for Agriculture and Health

The interdisciplinary venture will provide for two professorial posts three lectureships, five  postdoctoral posts and fourteen PhD studentships, as well as hosting visiting research fellows.  Many of these posts will be based at LIDC's premises at 36 Gordon Square. All research projects will be designed as joint activities between health and agricultural researchers. Each PhD studentship will be registered in one of the Colleges above and jointly supervised by health and agricultural researchers. The programme will also organise international conferences and exchanges to help develop this new area.
