Cultivating sustainable and healthy food systems

How will we do this?
How much do we really know about the link between agriculture, food and nutrition security and health in our rapidly changing world?

Agriculture and food systems are changing rapidly driven among other things by major transformations in demand for food resulting from economic development, climate change, urbanisation, changes in lifestyle and consumption patterns. Making agriculture and food systems sustainable and healthy is currently on top of the health policy and development agenda.

Over the past five years, researchers in LSHTM and other Bloomsbury Colleges have made rapid strides in advancing our understanding of the interactions between agriculture, food systems and health and in the development of tools to predict the effects agricultural-food system change will have on nutrition and health outcomes. Much of this work has been led by the interdisciplinary team in the Leverhulme Centre for Integrative Research on Agriculture and Health (LCIRAH).

This interactive session brought together a panel of six speakers followed by a facilitated discussion to highlight some of the key advances made by the LSHTM team in this field. The panel included researchers across the three LSHTM Faculties and LSHTM collaborators from the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) and SOAS, University of London. The session also included poster presentations.
