A Matter of Honour: Being Chinese in South Africa

Tuesday, September 9, 2008 (All day)

From: 17.00-19.00

Venue: Room 116, School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), Thornhaugh Street, Russell Square, London, WC1H OXG

Speaker: Dr Yoon Jung Park, a Post-doctoral Fellow at the Centre for Sociological
Research at the University of Johannesburg and the convener/coordinator of the Chinese in Africa/Africans in China research working group, will launch her book A Matter of Honour. Being Chinese in South Africa.

The South African-born Chinese community is a tiny one. Throughout much of the history of this most race-conscious of countries it has been ignored or neglected, and its members have been officially classed as "Coloureds" (people of mixed race) or with Indians as "Asiatic". As China's presence in Africa deepens and new Chinese immigrants stream into Africa, this book is a timely examination of the only resident Chinese community on the continent.
