LIDC Global Development Photography Competition

LIDC's global development photography competition 'Lens on Development' is now open!

Are you a budding photographer? took an amazing photo on your last holiday? Enter the LIDC photography competition and you could win £100 and have your image displayed at an LIDC drinks reception.

The competition is open to all post-graduate students (including students due to start in September 2016) staff and alumni of our member colleges: Birkbeck, SOAS, LSHTM, UCL IOE and RVC and current students at UCL DPU.


Submissions must reflect current global development challenges and/or successes and be accompanied by a short description of the photograph describing its location and relation to the theme. Ideas include:

  • Submissions related to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Eg. images depicting themes such as women’s equality, nutrition, climate change or poverty reduction.
  • Submissions related to academic research into global development issues including images depicting fieldwork, data collection and research methods


The winner will receive £100 and the top photographs will be exhibited and followed by a drinks event held by LIDC (date tbc) where there will be an opportunity to meet LIDC's new interim director and receive your award. The two runners up will receive an award of £25 each.


The original deadline for this competition (12/09/16) has been extended until Midnight on 31st October 2016 and each entrant may submit up to three photos. 

All entries must be in JPEG or PNG, include a short description of the photograph (location, relation to themes etc). Please send all submissions to anjuli.borgonha@lidc.bloomsbury.ac.uk by midnight on the closing date (GMT) and include your name, and details of your eligibility (such as course name and graduation year)


While copyright will remain with the photographer, by entering the competition all applicants agree to let LIDC use the image in their marketing and communications (online and paper). The photographer and image copyright will be acknowledged when the images are used.


At LIDC we are very privileged to work with a number of fantastic images adorning our office walls supplied to us by the organisation PhotoVoice, a charity which uses participatory photography as a catalyst for social change. Have a look at the images on their site for ideas!
