LIDC launches new Fellowship Scheme to support interdisciplinary research in international development across Bloomsbury Colleges

On 20 February 2013 the London International Development Centre (LIDC) launched a new Fellowship Scheme that aims to support new collaborative research projects in international development between academics from at least two different Bloomsbury Colleges – LIDC members (Birkbeck, Institute of Education, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, SOAS and Royal Veterinary College).

Grants of up to £5,000 per project will be awarded to support innovative ideas for international development research that are inter-sectoral (e.g. between education and health, agriculture and environment, etc.) and/ or interdisciplinary (e.g. between political science and anthropology, economics and epidemiology, etc.). The Fellowships are intended as seed funding to help collaborators across Colleges to develop new research areas.

Prof. Jeff Waage, Director of LIDC, said:

‘LIDC has been supporting interdisciplinary intercollegiate research since our establishment in 2007. We are now delighted to be able to directly fund new innovative projects that allow our members to work together and with LIDC to advance research for a greater development impact.’

Prof. Jonathan Elliott, Chair of the Bloomsbury Research Committee and member of LIDC Management Group, said:

‘We applaud this new initiative by LIDC. The LIDC Fellowship Scheme is addressing an important gap and providing a valuable opportunity for Bloomsbury academics to engage in collaborative research that cuts across institutions, disciplines and sectors.’

LIDC is accepting Fellowship applications until 11 April 2013. In May the Bloomsbury Research Committee will review the applications and select successful proposals. First projects funded by the Fellowships are expected to start in the spring of 2013.
